Aquaphobia: by Debora Spanhol Ivankio
Debora Spanhol Ivankio is a fashion photographer from Berlin. Debora’s work is edgy, over the top, screaming, noticeable yet feminine and soft. The beauty of the shoot comes to reveal the character who stands under the spotlights, the strength in a perfect imbalance to the weakness.
The editorial ‘Aquaphobia’ as it appears from the title and the real story behind the shoot is a genuine fear of water around which the photoshoot evolved.
What is the story behind this shoot?
Ok, I will try to speak about this shooting. I don’t like to do that, but this editorial has a good history!
When I was creating it, I imagined something lighter, more peaceful. But when Yuan entered the bathtub everything changed because she had a relationship of fear with the water, she had agony, the water could not enter her ear, and not even be close to her face.
This could have been terrible and end the shooting, but this was one of the truest editorials I've ever done. In the fashion photography market, most of the time it's all fake, a story created, a character the model has to be. While this one was real. I forgot the concept I imagined, and simply photographed the vibe of the model, it was wonderful, real, I loved it. I wish everyone would have an experience like this.
"I forgot the concept I imagined, and simply photographed the vibe of the model, it was wonderful, real, I loved it. I wish everyone would have an experience like this".
When thinking of the location at which point did you have in mind shooting in a tub?
"Honestly, I loved that bathtub, and I was moving house, so I thought, I want to take a picture here before I leave".
What are your guidelines for retouching the work? What is important for you?
I hate editing my photos, but I always edit because I never find someone who understands my vibe.
I do not like much retouch, I like the photo looking natural, especially the skin of the model.
This shooting was the first time I worked with @jestudio.eu , and I really liked it, we made necessary adjustments, but we managed to leave it 'natural', I think, hahaha.
