Werisferia a word that holds a hint and a promise to find mystery the path to which might lead through the discovery of inner truths. Omer Kaplan, an Israeli fashion photographer, and videographer together with Shira Levi, a stylist, and Tal Bentzur, a MUAH artist joined forces to create a story in which the character is in search for a deeper understanding of her nature.
The powerful contrast of the colors of nature with profoundly deep green and the nudes of the garments build a striking presence of a person as an additional element of life in nature. Loneliness comes to being through eyes and stare, through the gloom of the wintery weather and the dim light though hope remains. Hope for something more.
‘WERIFESTERIA IS A NEW WORD STARTED TO BE USED IN 2014, ITS MEANING IS "TO WANDER LONGINGLY THROUGH THE FOREST IN SEARCH OF MYSTERY.’
What is Werifesteria about?
Omer: Werifesteria is a new word started to be used in 2014, its meaning is "to wander longingly through the forest in search of mystery.” For us, it was just a perfect word to describe and emphasize the essence of the editorial.
The editorial is mainly about finding yourself, what happens when you wander in the forest trying to search for an inner truth. The story is about a girl who wanders in the forest and is looking to reveal something about herself through walking around and getting lost.
The editorial tells the story about everyone’s life. I think that all of us are seeking some information about ourselves that we know we can find only through an inner process.
‘WE HAD TO WAIT FOR WINTER BECAUSE WE WANTED THE GRASS TO LOOK GREEN, AND THE LAKE TO BE FULL OF WATER AGAIN’
What was important for you when scouting for the location? What did you want to be present?
Omer: There’s an interesting story about the location. To be honest, I know this place for the last 2 years. I’ve been spending my Fridays (which for us are days off) over there with a small community of people that do AcroYoga and Flow.
I've always been interested in doing a photoshoot in this location, and I was thinking about it for quite some time. We had to wait for winter because we wanted the grass to look green, and the lake to be full of water again.
So the idea for the editorial came out of the location, of spending hours with these people and letting the mind the freedom it needed. When you’re working on an editorial, usually it works the opposite. First, you develop an idea, and then you’re looking for the proper location that emphasizes your idea the best.
What is the most challenging part of shooting outdoors?
Omer: The most challenging part of shooting outdoors for us was the timing of the shooting. I wanted to shoot the editorial using daylight and reflector only, so we had to shoot it from noon to sunset. This created a challenge because, in Israel, the sunset during winter is very early so we had to run against time. To deal with the complexity of the timing, Ariel and I went to the location in advance, so we knew the location perfectly.
How closely do you work with storyboard on set and can you afford spontaneity?
Omer: The team I had is the team I usually work with, so we know each other quite well, our working habits, etc… We work with storyboard every time but always leave space for spontaneity. Our storyboard includes images of the location and compositions, styling, make-up, and sometimes angles and lightning.
Everything is well prepared but the poses/standings of the model. We always work together in patience, understanding, and respect.
Which atmosphere did you want to create with styling and colors chosen?
Shira:I wanted to create a perfect harmony between the character and the scenery as if she is one with nature. To create this merge, I chose warm colors inspired by nature and combined them with classic elegant style, dressing her modestly with layers to achieve tenderness and innocence.
‘USUALLY, AT SOME POINT IN TIME, YOU FIND A LITTLE FREE TIME TO YOURSELF, AND THEN YOU CAN TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND THINK OF A NEW IDEA - WERIFESTERIA’
What do you think your next shoot’s theme might be?
Omer: We are always busy with our day-to-day life until an idea shows up. Nowadays we are very busy with our career and ambitions which are good things, so our mind is full of things we have to do now… Usually, at some point in time, you find a little free time to yourself, and then you can take a deep breath and think of a new idea - Werifesteria.
