No Sense of Belonging

Words by Nastasia Khmelnitski

Where does one belong? Emmie ponders on this topic in conversation with WÜL, opening up about her own experience and an attempt to define her struggle. As a person whose profession is to be available for the global shoots, she needs to travel a lot, switching countries and continents. While the dynamics of the profession is something

to crave for, something that contributes a feeling of movement, of being alive, it also poses questions of home. Is home a physical place where one spends most of her time or a place where happiness and ease dominate? And what happens when there is no specific definition when real ease and happiness come in another form?

Everyone has a story to tell, the past occurrences that shape our behavior, mode of conduct, and the general sense of what personality. Emmie speaks about her childhood and the decisions she consciously makes along the way. Emmie finds her way to re-energize in partying. Music allows to refresh and to refill the mental state, bringing in positive energies, filling the jar of creativity that allows moving forward. While meeting new people is not the main goal, music is.

We decided to meet Emmie during one of her latest trips to Tel-Aviv and shoot a short visual experience trying to capture her essence and her way of being in the world. WÜL collective has carefully crafted the story to present Emmie not as a well-known creator rather shine some light on her as a unique person with a defined say.  Emmie is a fashion photographer, originally from Moscow. She studied in London since the age of 10.

Emmie got her first camera at 13 and became fascinated with photography after discovering the theory behind this medium in College. While in Paris, Emmie got a tattoo that carries significant meaning for her. ‘I really did feel happy, I think, Paris really did give me this final sense of happiness, this burst of hormones, you know. And, it was really cool that somebody just sensed it from the other side. So, I have that as a reminder that you can really just like shine from the inside, which I think is something that we should all strive to feel all the time.” - Emmie.
